But despite his centenarian status, Van Dyke has no intention of hanging up his hat just yet. Filling up with some priceless time with my friend, walking in the rain, vegan Mongolian stir-fry, wisdoms about life and good laughs. Mike is a treasure trove of life experiences and the power of the mind. He lost his first wife as a young man and raised their three children. He lived through the Great Depression and World War II and much more. Survived cancer at age 69, despite being given possibly 3 months to live. He’s been happily married to Marilyn over 30 years. He’s not impervious to the years of gravity but continues to be a great source of inspiration to me and many others. I’m grateful for the time I had away — away from the noise, from the busyness, from the fast pace of everything happing in this world, from the need to know everything that is going on in the instant it occurs. I’m grateful, just like Mr. Rogers mentions, for the silence I was afforded in my time away. I wish we all could give that gift to each other more often, or even give that to ourselves. I’m also grateful for the time I had to reflect, and the time I had to wonder. I know as the world goes by, as the days get busier once again, I may not have as much time to sit in reflection, to wonder about the possibilities, but I will do my best to make time. Just outside her window, she could see hot-pink rhododendron flowers and the stately redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Despite the beauty, it was a view — and a life — she was still adjusting to. Calvert is 100 years old. She’d spent the last six decades in a little house in Pacific Palisades with an ocean view. She lived alone in Tahitian Terrace, a hillside mobile home park where, until January, she had occupied the same rented plot on Samoa Way since around 1967. “I loved everything about the Palisades,” Calvert said. On the last day of #NationalPoetryMonth, we take a On the last day of #NationalPoetryMonth, we take a a moment to honor the late, Bobby Gonzalez - a #Nuyoricanpoet, and author of “The Last #PuertoRican,” and “#Taino Zen.” The Bronx native (@bronxtaino) had traveled to over 40 states to educate all he encountered about the importance of knowing your roots. In our 2017 interview with him, he said: “We were very fortunate, my brothers and I, to have had two Puerto Rican parents who always made the point to tell us where we came from and instilled in us a great pride of who we were…That inspired me to embark on a lifetime of personal research. I got my information from books and oral traditions – here and in Puerto Rico. When I was a little boy, my parents would take me to Puerto Rico, and I would sit at the feet of my great grandfather. He would tell me the stories of the old days, and I would roll my eyes, but I wish I listened more carefully.” We thank you, Bobby for your gift of #storytelling, and for reminding us of the importance of truly listening to our elders.
