On the last day of #NationalPoetryMonth, we take a On the last day of #NationalPoetryMonth, we take a a moment to honor the late, Bobby Gonzalez - a #Nuyoricanpoet, and author of “The Last #PuertoRican,” and “#Taino Zen.” The Bronx native (@bronxtaino) had traveled to over 40 states to educate all he encountered about the importance of knowing your roots. In our 2017 interview with him, he said: “We were very fortunate, my brothers and I, to have had two Puerto Rican parents who always made the point to tell us where we came from and instilled in us a great pride of who we were…That inspired me to embark on a lifetime of personal research. I got my information from books and oral traditions – here and in Puerto Rico. When I was a little boy, my parents would take me to Puerto Rico, and I would sit at the feet of my great grandfather. He would tell me the stories of the old days, and I would roll my eyes, but I wish I listened more carefully.” We thank you, Bobby for your gift of #storytelling, and for reminding us of the importance of truly listening to our elders. Your words will never die.

Even if you didn’t lose anything we can all use this advice. This is my grandma Ruth who lost her home and two rental properties (her source of income at 89). She didn’t shed a tear for her own losses except for her daughter. She didn’t even have time to get her purse or meds. Her to do list today included the dmv, pharmacy, bank, insurance, and calling the library to tell them her book had been burned so she wouldn’t be able to return it. She said she didn’t expect to live much longer as she turns 90 next month but now she is inspired to live to rebuild her home and her community and enjoy it. She was too prideful when our family suggested getting donations. She’s known for the numerous charitable contributions she makes year after year. If you’re so inclined see my stories for the link. Her name is Hideko Yamashita. And while Yamashita, 70, has never reached Kondo’s level of Netflix-induced fame, she is widely credited in Japan with spearheading the modern movement of decluttering our homes — or, as it has come to be called overseas, “kondo-ing.” The two women, born three decades apart in Tokyo, both preach the idea that households amass too much stuff. Letting go of unnecessary items and creating minimalist, tidier spaces, they argue, can enhance mental well-being. But Yamashita and Kondo approach decluttering in different ways. But have you heard of this amazing woman behind its revival? Posted @withregram • @miamiherald @barbarahulanicki, Officer of the Order of the British Empire, strides down the busy sidewalk on Washington Avenue in South Beach. The designer and entrepreneur who democratized and revolutionized shopping and fashion in the 1960s and 1970s shows no sign she’s gaining fast on 90. Even amid South Beach’s perpetual street carnival, Hulanicki strikes quite a figure in her trademark raiment. A blondish bob-shock of hair aside, she’s in head-to-toe black, from the slim pants and body-hugging pointy-shouldered leather jacket—always, always there is a jacket to finish the look—down to her fingernails, to the chunky geometric rings, the wristbands, even the tint of the lenses on her black-framed eyeglasses. What little skin shows is deeply tanned. It’s plain no one recognizes the woman revered in the U.K., and anointed an OBE by Prince Charles, as the creative force behind legendary store and label Biba, and who, in a remarkable second act born of happenstance, crafted a series of adventurous, unorthodox, colorfully saturated makeovers of faded Art Deco hotels that set the celeb-magnet template for the revival of South Beach back in the late 1980s, when the district was dark and dangerous. Hulanicki, now 87, has never since left South Beach, never stopped working, designing and imagining. It’s been 60 years since she and her late husband Stephen Fitz-Simon opened Biba, which overturned the stodgy fashion scene of the day with stylish, inexpensive clothes, becoming such a sensation that the store drew more visitors at its peak than any other attraction in the British capital save the Tower of London.
